The Y-Balance Test is a dynamic balance assessment that measures your ability to reach in three directions while maintaining single-leg stance stability.
What This Test Measures
This test measures your dynamic balance, stability, and neuromuscular control while standing on one leg and reaching in three directions (anterior, posteromedial, and posterolateral).
Equipment Needed
Y-Balance test kit (or tape to create three reach lines at 120-degree angles)
Measuring tape
Flat, non-slip surface
How to Perform the Test
Set up three reach lines on the floor at 120-degree angles from each other, creating a Y shape (anterior, posteromedial, and posterolateral).
Stand at the center of the Y on one foot.
While maintaining balance on the stance leg, reach as far as possible along each line with the free foot, lightly touching the line without transferring weight.
Return to the starting position without losing balance.
Measure and record the reach distance for each direction.
Perform three trials in each direction on each leg and record the best result.
Tips for Best Results
Practice the movement pattern before testing to become familiar with the reach directions.
Keep your stance foot flat on the ground throughout each reach.
Touch the reach line lightly — don't press weight into it.
Maintain an upright posture during each reach.
Allow adequate rest between trials.
Interpreting Your Results
Reach distances are typically normalized to your leg length for comparison. Larger reach distances indicate better dynamic balance and stability. Asymmetries between legs may indicate injury risk.
