Queens College Step Test

The Queens College Step Test is a submaximal aerobic fitness test that estimates cardiovascular endurance by measuring heart rate recovery after stepping up and down on a bench at a set cadence.

What This Test Measures

  • This test estimates your VO2 max and cardiovascular fitness by measuring how quickly your heart rate recovers after a standardized stepping exercise.

Equipment Needed

  • A sturdy bench or step (approximately 41 cm / 16.25 inches high)
  • Metronome or audio track set to 22 steps/min (females) or 24 steps/min (males)
  • Stopwatch or timer
  • Heart rate monitor or ability to take manual pulse

How to Perform the Test

  1. Set the metronome to the correct cadence: 22 steps per minute for females, 24 steps per minute for males.
  2. Stand facing the bench or step.
  3. Step up with one foot, then the other, then step down with the first foot, then the other, keeping in time with the metronome.
  4. Continue stepping for exactly 3 minutes.
  5. At the end of 3 minutes, stop stepping and remain standing.
  6. After 5 seconds of rest, count your pulse for 15 seconds (from 5 to 20 seconds post-exercise).
  7. Multiply the 15-second pulse count by 4 to get beats per minute (bpm).
  8. Use the Queens College formula to estimate VO2 max from your recovery heart rate.

Tips for Best Results

  • Maintain a consistent stepping rhythm throughout the test.
  • Step fully onto the bench with each step — avoid partial foot placement.
  • Keep an upright posture and avoid leaning forward.
  • Practice taking your pulse accurately before attempting the test.

Interpreting Your Results

  • Your estimated VO2 max is calculated from your recovery heart rate. A lower recovery heart rate indicates better cardiovascular fitness. Results are compared to normative data based on age and gender.
