5 Essential Fitness Tests Every PE Teacher Should Know
Running fitness tests in a PE class can feel chaotic. But with the right selection of tests, you can cover every major fitness component in a single session and walk away with data you can actually use.
1. The 20m Shuttle Run (Beep Test)
The beep test is the gold standard for measuring aerobic capacity. It's simple to administer, scales with fitness level, and most students already know how it works.
2. Vertical Jump
A quick, space-efficient way to measure explosive leg power. Use a wall and chalk for a budget setup.
3. Sit and Reach
Flexibility matters, and this classic test gives you a reproducible number with almost no equipment.
4. Push-Up Test
Measures upper body muscular endurance. Set a cadence and count reps to fatigue.
5. Sit-Up Test
Core endurance. Use a 1-minute time cap.
Together, these five tests cover aerobic fitness, power, flexibility, and muscular endurance — the foundations of a balanced fitness profile.
